Child Health

In addition to Malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea are two other common killers diseases of under-five children in Nigeria. According to UNICEF and WHO reports on child mortality in Nigeria in 2018, pneumonia ranks first, followed by diarrhea and Malaria. In UNICEF Report (2018), Nigeria ranked highest (20.25%) on global pneumonia-related deaths (162,000/800,000 global deaths) for children under the age of five years. The 2018 report is similar to that of 2017. 19% of child deaths (443 deaths per day or 18 deaths every hour) in Nigeria in 2018 were due to pneumonia. UNICEF reported 480,000 childhood deaths (1,300 per day) due to diarrhea in 2017, of which 10% (48,000) of it is from Nigeria.
