Geriatric Health: Chronic Complex Diseases Management
Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are common diseases in rural communities in Nigeria. These conditions usually go undiagnosed until severe complications occur. Patients often neglect to seek care due to poverty. Parents struggle with limited resources and prefer to use them to provide food for their children and often cannot afford to pay for their medical care. In addition, they lack basic education about the disease and are often told and believe they are inflicted by evil spirits instead. With this, they often seek spiritual and other alternate cures to the disease that are grossly ineffective. Sadly, this often leads to painful death and increased suffering for the affected families.
Chronic joint pain, infection, stomach ulcer, heart failure and lung diseases are also prevalent.
Patients with these chronic diseases visit the OCHF Medical clinic regularly for appropriate tests and refills of their short and long-term medication at no cost to them.
